About Jim Culveyhouse!

Jim’s hails from Gary, Indiana where he found his passion for golf at Gary Country Club (now called Innisbruck Country Club) at the tender age of 10.  He worked summers and weekends as a caddie, eventually working his way up to Caddie Master.  Jim attended Andrean High School where he earned 9 letters in three sports and was elected to the Andrean High School Hall of Fame for Golf and Tennis.  After graduation Jim went on to college.  To pay tuition, Jim tarred basements one summer and the following summers he worked the midnight shift on a loading dock and then during the day as Caddie Master for two years to pay his own way at Notre Dame.   Not much time for sleep but it was worth it.

Jim graduated from the University of Notre Dame.    He majored in Management and received minors in Accounting, Marketing and Finance.  Jim also lettered all 4 years in golf, having joined the team as a walk on his Freshman year.  Jim was elected to the Monogram Club’s Ring of Names for his golf accomplishments at ND.  Upon graduating from Notre Dame, Jim joined the E & J Gallo Winery out of Modesto, CA. Starting as a salesman in Los Angeles, CA, he held various management positions throughout the company. His last position was Export Marketing Manager. He continued his business career with the Coca-Cola Company out of Atlanta, GA, working for Coca-Cola USA as a marketing manager until he was transferred to Cincinnati, Ohio. He was working as a Diet Coke Introduction Coordinator when he met his lovely wife, Melanie. From there, he was transferred to the Northwest as Sales Development Manager for the Northwest, later becoming Director of Sales for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Oregon. In this position, he directed sales for 16 different plants through the Northwest and Northern California (an eighty plus million dollar operation!).

 After leaving Coca-Cola, Jim, and Melanie, started a direct sales marketing firm before selling the business after 5 years. They then purchased Chuckles Gift Shop in the Salem Center Mall and expanded the business to 3 stores, continuing the operations for 14 years before selling the business.  Chuckles was honored as one of the Oregon Small Business Administration’s small businesses of the year and was recognized nationally with the National Blue Chip Enterprise Award.

For the past 16 years, Jim has been a faculty member at Chemeketa Community College.  He was head of the Small Business Management Program offered through Chemeketa’s Training and Economic Development Center in downtown Salem, OR.   He has consulted over 600 businesses in the Willamette Valley through his program.

Those lucky enough to get in Jim’s class found his small business experience and savvy practical advice to be a profitable endeavor.  Jim took the program to all time highs, earning several awards and accolades for the program.  In honor of his dedication, Jim was honored as the runner up for the Oregon Small Business Person of the Year award presented by the Small Business Administration.

 Jim has served on the Boards of the March of Dimes, the United Methodist Retirement Center, the McNary Estates Association, The Lakeshore Association, and Creekside Golf Club, where he served as past president. He also is the general manager of the River Road Plaza complex in Keizer, OR; served on the Oregon Junior-Senior Golf Association Board of Directors; and is a member of the Notre Dame Monogram Club.

After his diagnosis, Jim had to step down from his position at Chemeketa Community College, but he continues to work with past clients. Jim still takes time for golf.  He doesn’t hit the ball as far anymore but he likes to remind himself that at least he still gets to play.

After being diagnosed with ALS in February of 2007, Jim decided to take on ALS.  He is currently working with the ALS Division of Oregon’s MDA as their Chairperson for the State of Oregon.  He has turned all his energy towards fundraising to find a cure for this disease.  As Jim says, “I’m devoting the rest of the time I have left to help find a cure for this terrible, under funded incurable disease.”

Peter Jacobsen, the PGA golfer who has won numerous PGA and Champions Tour tournaments and designed the club Jim has been a member of since day one fifteen years ago, wrote Jim a note saying;

I work with the ALS Driving 4 Life Foundation that was established by Tom Watson in memory of his long time caddy Bruce Edwards. As a native Oregonian, I encourage you to support Jim in his efforts in fighting this terrible disease.”

If you can give, please give to by clicking here to help fight this dreadful disease.  ALS can affect anyone and no causes have been found.  ALS research is good but it needs to be better.  As science advances, the cure gets closer -- but not without your help!
